Fun times are coming to Karonga as the newly-constructed Karonga Museum Amphitheatre will host a day-long winter theatre festival on July 6.
The festival, which has been organised by the National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam), will see more than four theatre groups from across the country vying for the stage.
Ntam president Manase Chisiza told The Nation that the festival has been organised to revamp theatre.
"We have started with Karonga to welcome the newly built Karonga Museum Amphitheatre. We have prepared to give the audience in Karonga the best entertainment on Independence Day," said theatre association president.
According Chisiza, the participating groups include Chikolopa Performing Arts, Mbuto Living Theatre, Nyangenyayange Drama Group and Oneness Arts Theatre.
Besides theatre, there will be other supporting activities such as acoustic music and stand-up comedy by Sam Mthetho, he said.
Karonga Museum Amphitheatre was constructed with funding from the Norwegian Embassy.
Among the plays to headline the festival is Communication Breakdown, a comedy produced by Chisiza which features German actress Andrea Beyerlein.
The 30-minute comedy was written by Chisiza's brother, the late Malumbo Chisiza aka Dr Lizard.
"It is a bilingual play in English and Tumbuka. It is all about a typical Tumbuka man who is employed by an English-speaking employer and there is always a communication breakdown between the two which results in several inconveniences," said Chisiza.
